The Working Approach
Adobe Illustrator Scripting is a reference-led Skill for authoring and debugging ExtendScript inside Illustrator. It covers the document object model from layers and artboards to paths, text frames, swatches and symbols. The useful distinction is control over editable artwork: a script can change named objects, construct geometry and export variants without reducing the design to a flat image.
The source goes beyond basic shape creation into failure modes that matter in real production files. It distinguishes linked images from embedded raster items, explains clipping-mask bounds, and accounts for locked ancestors and external launchers that do not pass arguments as expected. Use it when a repeatable editing operation is clearer than a new visual concept, and keep a copy of the original document for comparison.
Expected Deliverables
- An Illustrator .jsx script with explicit document and layer targets
- Editable artwork or artboard variants generated from supplied content
- AI, PDF, PNG or SVG exports with named output paths
From Brief to Review
- 01Map the Document
Identify the target layers, named objects, artboards and RGB or CMYK mode. State which artwork must remain untouched.
- 02Encode the Operation
Write ES3-compatible ExtendScript using the relevant object types. Convert requested dimensions to points and distinguish geometric bounds from stroke-inclusive bounds.
- 03Run and Inspect a Copy
Execute through Illustrator, inspect placement and text, then save explicitly. For external launchers, use inspectable parameters and an absolute-path diagnostic log.
