01 What It Does

Card Sort Analysis: Interpret User Groupings

Post-study card-sort synthesis with similarity evidence, category proposals, and ambiguity handling.

Source-based workflowNot an execution benchmark

The Working Approach

Card Sort Analysis works after a sorting study has been run. It first establishes whether the study was open or closed, which cards were included, and how many participants contributed. It then examines common groupings and naming conventions.

The central artifact is a similarity view showing how often items were placed together, followed by proposed categories and labels. Inconsistent cards remain an explicit finding. The result informs information architecture; it is not by itself a finished site structure or proof that the proposed navigation is findable.

Expected Deliverables

  • A card-pair similarity matrix
  • Proposed categories and participant-informed labels
  • Ambiguous cards and recommended follow-up research

From Brief to Review

  1. 01
    Confirm the Study

Read the actual results and establish method, participant count, and card set.

  2. 02
    Compare Groupings

Identify repeated co-occurrence and category names without inventing missing responses.

  3. 03
    Propose and Test

Recommend groupings, flag unstable cards, and identify whether tree testing or more research is needed.

02 When to Use It

When to Use It

Provide completed card-sort results, including each participant's placements, labels and the study method. The skill analyzes supplied evidence; recruitment and data collection are separate.

A Good Fit

  • Completed Sort StudiesUse when raw open- or closed-sort results need synthesis.
  • Navigation Label DecisionsCompare participant naming with a proposed category vocabulary.

Limits to Check

  • No Study Data CollectionThe skill analyzes supplied results; it does not supply participants or responses.
  • Not Complete IAThe source explicitly separates grouping evidence from a full information-architecture task.

Bring These Inputs

  • Study ResultsProvide each participant's card placements and labels.
  • Study MethodState open or closed sorting and any fixed categories.
  • Content ContextExplain the content set and navigation decision.

03 Decisions That Matter

Decisions That Matter

  1. Visible Agreement

Pairwise grouping evidence shows where a category has support.

  2. Ambiguity Is Actionable

Unstable cards become follow-up questions rather than silently forced placements.

Start With One Deliverable

Adapt the scope, source material and constraints in this brief before running the skill.

Example Brief
Use card-sort-analysis on this open-sort spreadsheet. Verify the card set and participant count, produce a similarity matrix, propose category labels, and list cards with inconsistent placement. Recommend what a tree test should check next.

Inspect the Result

Check the actual output against these observable criteria.

  • The matrix derives from supplied placements.
  • Proposed labels connect to observed naming.
  • Ambiguous cards remain visible.

06 Questions Before You Start

Questions Before You Start

Can it analyze a closed sort?

Yes. The source explicitly covers both open and closed methods.

Does it finish the site's architecture?

No. It supplies grouping and naming evidence for a separate architecture decision.

What happens to inconsistent cards?

They are highlighted with a recommendation for further testing or iteration.
