Qoder Fits When

  • Deep repository understanding. Context on architecture and conventions — distilled into a repo wiki — so output reuses your real components and tokens.
  • Spec-driven quests. Quest mode turns a written spec into a planned, implemented, and self-verified result, end to end.
  • Rules + MCP. Project rules carry your conventions; the Figma MCP server brings real design context into code.
  • Lite / Efficient / Auto. Pick a model tier per session; Auto lets Qoder's scheduler choose a model per task.

Choose Another Workflow When

  • You need editable vector files. The artifact is HTML, not an editable design document. Check a separate vector workflow for your required asset format.
  • You have no reference and no constraints. Without a design system or examples the output tends toward a generic look; write the brief first.
  • You do not have the credential this agent needs. Required: Qoder account. OpenDesign does not provide or proxy credentials.
  • Your team works in Qwen or Trae CLI. Those agents have their own pages; the workspace is the same, the setup differs. See related agents.

Qoder is Alibaba's agentic coding platform — an AI development environment available as a desktop app and a CLI. Qoder CLI brings that engine to the terminal: it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and works through tasks from natural language. This page is about designing interfaces with Qoder through OpenDesign, not about Qoder’s own interface. OpenDesign’s setup notes list the available agents.

    Choose the package for your computer, install it and open the app.

    Run One Small Qoder Task

    Use a small brief so you can judge the whole loop, including one revision.

    Starter brief

    Build a settings screen with a profile form and a save confirmation. Use my design rules. Check it at desktop and mobile widths.

    Open the result, test the save state and request one specific change. A generated file is the beginning of review, not the end.

The Qoder Design Workflow in Five Steps

The same metrics dashboard task, followed from brief to verified file. Each step lists what you provide, what Qoder does, what OpenDesign contributes and what you check.

    Design Brief

    Plain language, three to six lines. Name the audience, the job of the screen and the platforms.

    Qoder writes a self-contained HTML file: layout, styles, interactions and stable hooks.

    The file renders inside OpenDesign at the widths you asked for. This is where the design is judged.

    • CheckHierarchy, contrast, overflow at 390px, focus states, and whether the accent is used sparingly.

    Revise and Verify

    Request changes by pointing at elements in the preview. Every revision is a new file; nothing is overwritten silently.

Can Qoder CLI Really Do Design Work?
Yes — with an aesthetic skill, a design system, and real reference images in context, Qoder CLI produces production-quality, responsive UI, and its deep repository understanding helps it reuse your real components. Without that context it tends to default to a generic look, which is the gap OpenDesign fills.
How Do I Authenticate Qoder CLI?
Run qodercli and use /login to sign in with your Qoder account via the browser, or supply a Qoder personal access token for non-interactive environments. OpenDesign never proxies your credentials — the agent uses them directly.
What Makes Qoder CLI Good for Design Specifically?
Two things: it builds deep context on your repository — architecture, conventions, and a repo wiki — so it reuses your real primitives, and its spec-driven quests run a design task end to end. Both help, but taste still comes from the design system, skill, and references you supply.
What Are the Lite, Efficient, and Auto Model Tiers?
Qoder CLI lets you pick a model tier: Lite, Efficient, or Auto. Auto lets Qoder's scheduler choose a model per task, so you do not manage model selection by hand. Pick the tier that fits the job; Auto is a sensible default.
How Do I Connect Qoder CLI to Figma?
Add the Figma MCP server to Qoder's MCP configuration. Qoder can then pull real design context — components, variables, layout data — so the generated code matches the source instead of approximating it.
