01 What It Does

Remotion Captions: Timed Subtitle Data

A caption-data contract and routing file for transcription, SRT import, and visual display in Remotion.

Source-based workflowNot an execution benchmark

The Working Approach

Remotion Captions is a compact entry point for caption work rather than a complete video-design recipe. It requires captions to use the Caption type from @remotion/captions, with text, millisecond start and end times, and nullable timestamp and confidence fields.

The source routes transcription, caption display, and SRT import to different reference files. That separation matters: bringing existing subtitles into a composition is not the same task as generating a transcript, and neither guarantees that the final on-screen text has been reviewed against the audio.

Expected Deliverables

  • Caption JSON with the documented text and timing fields
  • Imported subtitle data or a transcript, depending on the selected path
  • Captions displayed in a Remotion composition

From Brief to Review

  1. 01
    Choose the Caption Input

Determine whether you have an audio/video source to transcribe or an existing SRT file to import.

  2. 02
    Preserve Timing Data

Keep the caption sequence in the documented JSON form rather than embedding all subtitles as one block of display text.

  3. 03
    Review the Display

Follow the display reference, preview in Remotion Studio, and check readable timing against the actual media.

02 When to Use It

When to Use It

A Remotion project, @remotion/captions, and the relevant transcription/import/display reference files.

A Good Fit

  • Existing Subtitle FilesThe SRT-specific route is relevant when an editor already has timed text and needs it inside a Remotion workflow.
  • Captioned VideoThe shared Caption shape provides a clear handoff between transcription data and subtitle presentation.

Limits to Check

  • Reference-DependentThe entry file links to the detailed transcription, import, and display instructions; it does not document every backend or style option itself.
  • No Transcript GuaranteeA confidence field is not evidence that words or timings are correct. Audio alignment and terminology still need review.

Bring These Inputs

  • Media or SRTProvide the real audio/video asset or subtitle file and identify which is authoritative.
  • Caption StyleDescribe the intended placement and readability constraints without assuming a particular animation preset.
  • Composition ContextSupply the existing Remotion project and its duration and frame rate so caption timing can be checked in context.

03 Decisions That Matter

Decisions That Matter

  1. Data Before Decoration

Explicit timestamps keep editorial corrections separate from how the captions are drawn.

  2. Task-Specific Routing

Import, transcription, and display each have a distinct reference path, reducing accidental reinvention of the wrong step.

Start With One Deliverable

Adapt the scope, source material and constraints in this brief before running the skill.

Example Brief
Use Remotion Captions to import my supplied SRT into this existing composition. Preserve its wording and millisecond timing in Caption JSON. Follow the import and display references, add readable captions, and show me the Studio preview. Flag timing overlaps or uncertain text rather than silently correcting them.

Inspect the Result

Check the actual output against these observable criteria.

  • Caption objects retain text, startMs, and endMs.
  • The chosen import or transcription path is documented.
  • Previewed captions align with the supplied media.

06 Questions Before You Start

Questions Before You Start

Can it use an SRT file?

Yes. The entry file explicitly links to an SRT-import workflow.

Does this file specify a transcription provider?

No. It links to a separate transcription reference. Read that reference to identify the provider and setup requirements before starting.

Are confidence scores always present?

The documented type allows confidence and timestampMs to be null. Missing values should not be fabricated.
