01 What It Does

Trace One User's End-to-End Experience

Map one persona’s current experience across touchpoints, showing emotional changes and prioritized opportunities grounded in research.

Source-based workflowNot an execution benchmark

The Working Approach

Journey Map organizes one persona's experience over time, with a defined scenario and clear start and finish. Each stage combines goals, actions, channels, questions, emotions, and friction so a team can see where a locally acceptable screen still contributes to a poor overall experience.

The source asks for an emotional curve and a small prioritized set of opportunities, including moments that can determine the outcome of the experience. Those emotions and priorities need to be grounded in supplied evidence. A current-state map should not quietly become an idealized future-state story.

Expected Deliverables

  • A stage-by-stage map of one persona and scenario.
  • An emotional curve with pain points and moments of truth.
  • A short opportunity list assessed for impact and feasibility.

From Brief to Review

  1. 01
    Bound the Journey

Choose the persona, scenario, and start and end events. Avoid merging several incompatible audiences into one average user.

  2. 02
    Connect Stages and Touchpoints

Map actions, questions, channels, and evidence of emotion at each stage.

  3. 03
    Identify Critical Moments

Highlight consequential breakdowns and rank a small set of improvement opportunities. Keep future ideas separate from the as-is map.

02 When to Use It

When to Use It

Uses existing personas, research, and analytics; no automatic sentiment measurement is established.

A Good Fit

  • Improving an Existing ExperienceUseful when research is scattered across onboarding, use, and support touchpoints.
  • Finding Cross-Channel FrictionCan show how a website step, email, and support interaction combine into one experience.

Limits to Check

  • Not a Screen FlowA user-flow diagram describes paths and branches between screens; this map includes the broader experience and emotional arc.
  • Not an Operations BlueprintBackstage processes and staff dependencies require a service blueprint rather than only the customer's view.

Bring These Inputs

  • Persona and ScenarioSpecify whose journey is being mapped and what they are trying to accomplish.
  • Experience EvidenceProvide interview observations, analytics, or support material for the stages.
  • Journey BoundariesName the starting event and the point at which this scenario ends.

03 Decisions That Matter

Decisions That Matter

  1. Moments Rather Than Screens

The decisive moment may span multiple channels, making it invisible in a screen inventory.

  2. Visible Evidence Gaps

An unobserved emotional state should remain unknown rather than being filled with a plausible-looking sentiment score.

Start With One Deliverable

Adapt the scope, source material and constraints in this brief before running the skill.

Example Brief
Use journey-map for a first-time freelancer submitting a paid project through our marketplace. Start at choosing a project and end after payment arrives. Use the supplied interviews and support cases, mark unknown emotions, and separate current friction from the three highest-priority future opportunities.

Inspect the Result

Check the actual output against these observable criteria.

  • The same persona and scenario are maintained across stages.
  • Emotions are supported or explicitly uncertain.
  • The opportunity list points back to specific current-state friction.

06 Questions Before You Start

Questions Before You Start

Should the map include every persona?

The source favors persona-specific journeys. Separate materially different scenarios instead of flattening them into one map.

How many stages should it use?

The source suggests five to seven, but stage boundaries should reflect the scenario rather than force arbitrary divisions.

Does the emotional curve prove user sentiment?

No. It summarizes the evidence provided; unsupported emotions should be treated as hypotheses.
