01 What It Does

Build Personas From Behavioral Evidence

A persona-synthesis workflow centered on behavioral clusters, goals, frustrations, prioritization, and research gaps.

Source-based workflowNot an execution benchmark

The Working Approach

User Persona organizes research into a small set of archetypes based on behaviors, motivations, and needs. The source explicitly rejects demographic-only personas and asks for design implications, so the result should help a team choose between product decisions rather than decorate a workshop.

It also asks the team to prioritize a primary persona and identify research gaps. Names, images, and illustrative narratives can make a profile readable, but they must not be confused with real participants or quoted evidence. When research is limited, the profile should remain a clearly labeled hypothesis.

Expected Deliverables

  • A small set of behavior-based persona profiles.
  • A primary-persona recommendation with design implications.
  • Research gaps and unresolved assumptions for further study.

From Brief to Review

  1. 01
    Review Available Evidence

Read interviews, surveys, analytics, and product context before defining a profile.

  2. 02
    Find Behavioral Clusters

Group patterns of goals, frustrations, and approaches rather than sorting people only by age or occupation.

  3. 03
    Connect Profiles to Decisions

Describe realistic scenarios, identify the primary audience, and explain what each pattern changes in design.

02 When to Use It

When to Use It

Requires genuine user evidence for research-grounded claims; supplied product URLs may need separate investigation.

A Good Fit

  • Shared User ReferenceUseful when different team members implicitly design for different audiences.
  • Research SynthesisTurns recurring behaviors into a practical decision artifact.

Limits to Check

  • Not Demographic Segmentation AloneA profile with only a name, age, and job does not satisfy the source's behavioral emphasis.
  • No Fabricated QuotesIllustrative wording must not be presented as a real participant statement.

Bring These Inputs

  • Research MaterialSupply interviews, survey responses, behavioral data, or existing validated findings.
  • Product ScopeExplain the decisions and workflows the personas should inform.
  • Evidence GapsIdentify underrepresented groups or unsupported assumptions.

03 Decisions That Matter

Decisions That Matter

  1. Design Consequences

A persona earns its place by changing a decision, not by sounding like a believable biography.

  2. Primary Audience Is Explicit

Prioritization helps resolve trade-offs without pretending one interface can optimize for every group equally.

Start With One Deliverable

Adapt the scope, source material and constraints in this brief before running the skill.

Example Brief
Use user-persona to synthesize these interviews with freelance designers and agency leads. Identify behavioral clusters, create two to four evidence-grounded profiles, and recommend a primary persona for review handoff. Label composite narratives and do not invent participant quotes, demographics, or research findings.

Inspect the Result

Check the actual output against these observable criteria.

  • Persona differences are behavioral and relevant to the product.
  • Each profile has concrete design implications.
  • Unsupported details and gaps are visible.

06 Questions Before You Start

Questions Before You Start

Can it create personas without research?

It can help formulate hypotheses, but those should not be labeled research-grounded until evidence supports them.

How many personas does it suggest?

The source proposes two to four, with a primary persona selected for the design priority.

How is this different from JTBD?

Personas summarize recurring user patterns; JTBD focuses on desired progress in a situation. The two can complement one another.
